Big water but the whales are here!

It turned out to be a pretty great whale watching day. Large waves made it tough but our persistence is paying off!

Over 230 whales were spotted along the coast today with close to 3000 people being assisted by our volunteers! Thank you volunteers!

Was that a whale… no a wave… maybe it was a whale?

The Winter Whale Watch week is officially underway!  Huge thank you to all of our volunteers out today!

Mother nature stopped by today and wanted to remind us that it is…in fact… winter.

We dealt with 10 – 16 foot swells today along the central coast with a not so pleasant 25mph wind and everyone had occasional rain. Whale watching was tough, but we still saw some!

Top 5 for today:

Cape Perpetua Visitor Center:                                                     12 whales

Depoe Bay Whale Center:                                                             6

Cape Foulweather & Ecola State Park:                                     4

Cape Ferrelo & Inn at Spanish Head:                                   3

Coast-wide 36 whales were spotted and over 971 visitors connected with our awesome volunteers!

See you tomorrow! (weather forecast looks good)

Final Practice Day!

They’re here!  On Saturday the 24th we saw 32 whales as they migrated by the Depoe Bay Whale Center.  This morning (12/26) I’ve already seen 5 as I washed the windows. It’s safe to say the migration is underway!

Volunteers will be stationed at the 24 locations starting tomorrow at 10:00 AM.

The Depoe Bay Whale Center will be open every day from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM  until January 2nd to help people see these amazing animals!

Cannon Ball!

Today the sun finally returned and so did our playful whales! This juvenile got up close and just wanted to remind everybody how impressive they are! Some of our summer residents are still in the area giving our visitors quite a show! Come see us in Depoe Bay but bring your sunglasses and rain jackets- mother nature is changing her mind quite a bit this time of year.

Rain or shine, we like it just fine!

Depoe Bay and the Whale Watching Center have always been great places to enjoy the beauty of the ocean and the creatures that live in it. As Fall approaches we start to see fewer visitors, but the whales have been  than ever! We have routinely had over 10 whales sighted each day over the past week and they don’t seem to mind the rain!
